Behavioral Control of Overeating
نویسنده
چکیده
Onnsrn is well-recognized as a major health hazard. Only two common characteristics have been observed in obese persons: a tendency to overeat and a tendency to underexercise (U.S. Public Health Service, undated). While obesity has been ascribed to various causes (Bychowski, 1950; Hamburger, 1951; Deri, 1955; Stunkard, 1959; Mendelson, 1966), the treatment of overeating has been successful when it is based solely upon a tunctional analysis of the maladaptive response (Ferster et al., 1962). The present paper presents Ferster’s approach in somewhat modified form and reports upon the clinical results to date.

A systematic characterization of compulsivity in pathological forms of eating has been proposed in the context of three functional domains: (1) habitual overeating; (2) overeating to relieve a negative emotional state; and (3) overeating despite aversive consequences. In this review, we provide evidence supporting this hypothesis and we differentiate the nascent field of neurocircuits and neuro...

Data suggest that low levels of dopamine D2 receptors and attenuated responsivity of dopamine-target regions to food intake is associated with increased eating and elevated weight. There is also growing (although mixed) evidence that genotypes that appear to lead to reduced dopamine signaling (e.g., DRD2, DRD4, and DAT) and certain appetite-related hormones and peptides (e.g., ghrelin, orexin A...
